Les Parisiens - Annotation

This post discusses a text document:

Les Parisiens. Avignon: Festival D'Avignon, 2017. Festival D'Avignon. Web. 30 July 2017. <http://www.festival-avignon.com/fr/spectacles/2017/les-parisiens>.

The text presented above is part of the 2017 Avignon Festival program. This specific entry is about the show Les Parisiens. Les Parisiens is directed by Olivier Py and adapted from his novel by the same name.”

The description basically narrates who the show is about and the key ideas tackled throughout the play. The show discusses the themes of God, power, death, religion, and other key ideas which are represented through the characters and their actions. Py sets a contrast between Aurelian and Lucas as follows: “L'un a parié qu'en perdant tout il sauverait la lumière, l'autre a pensé qu'en gagnant tout il agacerait le ciel.” Another key idea in the description above is that the script is adapted from a novel of the same name by the same author (Py).

Adapted from a novel, this play puts a major emphasis on the script and, thus, the audience pays more attention to the dramatic text. In contrast to postdramatic theatre, this is highly dependent on the written script and the way it is delivered. Personally, I found the topics discussed very relevant and enticing. However, other audience members who didn’t relate to the text as much found it lacking in the focus on the actors, structure, design, and scenography. However, it was still representative of how people think of certain abstract ideas and their stories. It was highly argumentative and enticing. Therefore, this brings our attention to arguments within dramatic and postdramatic theatre. Does dramatic or postdramatic always have a better effect than the other? Does each serve a different purpose? Also, does theatre have to be relevant in order to be good theatre?
